Les monnayages celtiques d’Italie du nord sont inspirés au départ par la drachme dite lourde de Marseille. Les premières émissions (types I-IV), antérieures au dernier tiers du IVe siècle avant J.-C., en sont des imitations assez fidèles. Elles sont frappées par les populations celtiques installées anciennement dans la région.
Les émissions de la fin duIVe siècle et du siècle suivant (types V-VIII) sont marquées par le naturalisme et la laténisation des images. Deux groupes — insubre et boïen-cénoman (type «lion-scorpion») — peuvent être distingués.
Alliés de Rome, les Transpadans continuent à frapper monnaie jusqu’en 89 avant J.-C. La différenciation par peuples s’accentue et certaines émissions portent des légendes en caractères nord-étrusques.

Celtic coins of Northern Italy were first modelled on the so-called “heavy” drachma of Marseilles. The first issues (types I-IV), earlier than the last third of the IVth c. BC, are rather close imitations of this drachma. They were minted by the Celtic peoples settled from old in that region. The issues made at the end of the IVth and during the IIIrd c. (types V-VII) are characterized by naturalistic and Latenized images. One can distinguish two groups, the Insubres on one hand and the Boii-Cenomani on the other (lion-and-scorpion type). When allied to Rome, the Transpadane continued minting to the year 84 BC, with a growing différenciation between the different peoples, some issues having a legend with North-Etruscan letters.
